Welcome to the Greenhouse Tunnel
Growing vegetables and herbs is a healthy and exciting activity, but what can thrive in the harsh Faroese climate? Perhaps more than you think!
At the back of the Nordic House, you’ll find our greenhouse, the Greenhouse Tunnel, where we experiment with cultivating various vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers. Delicious ingredients that often end up in the kitchen at Café Tita – served just a few metres from soil to table.
The Greenhouse Tunnel is open to visitors from May to October. You’re welcome to step inside, get inspired, or take a break and enjoy the sight and scent of all things green.
The Structure
The Greenhouse Tunnel is built with sustainability and durability in mind. The tunnel itself is made from reused pipes from the salmon industry and covered in polycarbonate – a strong material that can withstand the powerful Faroese wind, maintain a stable temperature, and let in the light plants need, even on grey days. The planting boxes are made from surplus materials from local construction projects. The tunnel was built in collaboration with Býarfesti and designed by Faroese engineer Ási Mikkelsen.
More Green to Come
The Greenhouse Tunnel is a collaboration with NordGen and part of the Nordic House’s broader work to promote sustainability, local food production, and biodiversity. We aim to inspire individuals, families, schools, and institutions to explore green projects of their own here in the Faroe Islands. Whether you have a big garden or just a balcony box, everyone can grow something.
The Greenhouse Tunnel is supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers, Betri, and Tórshavn Municipality.
